Lomi Lomi Nui
i Mana Lomi

There’s a number of varieties of the Lomi Lomi massage. The one I perform is called Lomi Lomi Nui (aka the Hawaiian temple massage); I occasionally introduce the elements of Mana Lomi massage.

These both come from the teachings of Hawaiian teachers. While they might differ in the techniques used, there is a common thread to them and this thread is the idea of Aloha, relating to love, respect, unity, breath and inner harmony.

Lomi Lomi Nui massage

Lomi Lomi Nui massage is a unique experience that in the past was given to clan chiefs, leaders, and shamans. Its aim was to release the tensions stuck in the body and give the massaged person person inner harmony, balance and peace of mind, and to ensure the unobstructed flow of vibrant life energy,so that the decisions this person would make would be best possible and the whole society would benefit.

Mana Lomi massage

Mana Lomi massage was developed by Dr Maka'ala Yates, a specialist in Hawaiian medicine, chiropractor and healer. This variety is also based on the Hawaiian idea of “mana” (meaning “life force”) of the body, the mind and the spirit. Mana Lomi involves many non-invasive techniques that affect the muscles and pain receptors. These techniques are completely pain-free and allow compression and stretching of the muscle attachments, bringing an immediate and long-term relief. The tissues become flexible and relaxed, and the pain is either significantly reduced or goes away completely.

What does a massage session involve?

The session starts with a short conversation between us. I might ask about the reason that brought you to the session, your ailments, the way you are feeling or your expectations. If you feel like it, you might tell me about that or choose not to - it’s up to you.

When you make yourself comfortable on the massage table (with no clothes on, but comfortably covered with a towel), I softly put my hands on your back and we remain motionless for a couple of minutes.

I ask you to take a few deep breaths to help you relax (if you want that, it’s the moment to say - in your mind - the intention you have). Next, following the tradition, I sing a traditional Hawaiian song, being a signal to us both that from now on our focus is on here and now, and on YOU most of all.

During the massage I uncover most of your body, but your private parts always remain covered with a towel.

To give you smooth and soothing touch, I use oil that wonderfully moisturizes and nourishes the skin.

When massaging, my hands go in circular motion, rub, pat, hug, and knead; I use the fingers, the palms, the forearms, and the arms, too. I also gently rotate your limbs, bend or stretch them to perform so called “joint rotations” (on the knee, hip and shoulder joints) in order to unblock the joints, release the tensions from them, relax and restore their range of movement.

There is music in the background - Hawaiian, or occasionally other, always soothing and relaxing.

I perform the massage with care and tenderness, fully accepting and respecting your body and the whole of you. The session is the time of tender touch, mindfulness and full focus on you.

After the massage I give you the time and space you need to rest, integrate the experience or have a nap.

You can feel safe. I’m there. I’m waiting for you.

After the massage you can have a glass of water or home-made lemonade.

I INVITE YOU TO MY MASSAGE!
